The Book of Sirach The author’s Hebrew name is Yeshua Ben (son of) Sira, which in the Greek translation became Jesus son of Sirach (50:27). Hence in Hebrew the book is known as the Wisdom of Ben Sira, and in Greek as Sirach. In Latin the work is called Liber Ecclesiasticus (the church book), because in the early Christian centuries it was widely used for instructing converts. This commentary employs the name Ben Sira for the author, and Sirach for the book. Ben Sira
